How to compress a PNG file

PNG files can be large, especially screenshots at high resolution. Compressing them makes them faster to upload and easier to share, while keeping the format that supports transparency and sharp text.

Option 1: compress and resize with Snapfold

  1. Open the Snapfold Compress and resize tool.
  2. Drop your PNG file in.
  3. Choose a target size such as Under 200 KB, or set a maximum width.
  4. Press Compress images and save.

The tool saves the result as JPG, which is smaller than PNG for photos. If you need to keep PNG format, use Option 2.

Option 2: convert to WebP

WebP is a modern format that is often 30 to 50 percent smaller than PNG at the same quality. Use the Snapfold Image converter to convert PNG to WebP. Most browsers and apps support WebP today.

When should I keep PNG?

Keep PNG when the image has a transparent background, when it contains sharp text or a logo, or when you need to edit it further. For photos without transparency, JPG or WebP will give you a much smaller file.
