How to convert HEIC to JPG

If a photo from your iPhone will not open on Windows, will not upload to a website, or shows an error in an app, it is probably a HEIC file. HEIC (also called HEIF) is the format iPhones use by default because it keeps photos small. Not every program, website or older computer understands it, but JPG works almost everywhere.

Method 1: convert in your browser

  1. Open the Snapfold tools and choose the Image converter tab.
  2. Set "Convert from" to HEIC and "Convert to" to JPG.
  3. Drop your photos in, press Convert images, then press the yellow Save button.

Your photos are not uploaded anywhere. The conversion happens on your device.

Method 2: make the iPhone take JPG photos

On your iPhone open Settings, then Camera, then Formats, and choose "Most Compatible". New photos will be saved as JPG. Photos you already took stay HEIC.

Method 3: use the built-in tools on your computer

On a Mac, open the photo in Preview, choose File, then Export, and pick JPEG. On Windows 10 and 11 you can install Microsoft's "HEIF Image Extensions" from the Microsoft Store so that HEIC files open in Photos.

JPG or PNG?

Choose JPG for photos, because the files are smaller. Choose PNG for screenshots, logos and images with sharp text or transparency, because PNG does not blur edges. Use the "Smaller file" quality option when you need a lighter file, and keep your originals in case you need the best quality later.
